Hi, I'm Lewis.

Between 2017 and 2020 I made about £50,000 in two and a half years from UK bookmaker offers. Tax-free, before software costs.

It started with something called matched betting: turning bookmaker free bets into cash with maths. It ended somewhere riskier. Here's the whole story, then exactly how it works in plain English, then the calculators.

How the £50k actually happened

I've always been a sucker for making money online, and about 90% of what I'd tried had flopped: harder than the YouTube gurus made out, or a straight-up scam. Then, in 2017, an article sent me to MoneySavingExpert, MoneySavingExpert sent me to OddsMonkey, and I found the one that actually worked.

Not all of the £50k came from the safe stuff, and I'm not going to pretend it did. Here's how it went, in order.

I used to teach this in mastermind sessions that sold for over £1,000 a seat. Everything on this site is the same material, free.

  1. 1

Free bets: about £1,000 in four weeks

Every UK bookmaker gives new customers a free bet. I took them one by one (Betfred, Coral, Ladbrokes, Bet365) and, instead of hoping they'd win, I laid each one at a betting exchange. That means betting against the same result, so whatever happened I kept most of the free bet's value as cash. About £1,000 in my first four weeks. When the sign-ups ran out I moved to reload offers like acca insurance, aiming to keep about 80% of every free bet.

  2. 2

    Bet365 2-up: the big earner

Bet365 paid a football bet out as a winner if your team went two goals up, even if they then drew or lost. Back at Bet365, lay at the exchange: usually a small, known cost, but when a team went two up and didn't win, both sides paid. That promo was a tremendous earner and a large share of the total.

  3. 3

    +EV casino offers

Slots pay back about 95% of what goes in, on average (that's RTP). When a bonus or free spins add more than the missing 5%, the offer is +EV, positive expected value: profitable on average, even though any one session can go either way. These were worth a lot.

  4. 4

    Each-way no-lay and Lucky 15s

One of the oldest tricks in the game. When a bookie's each-way terms on a horse are generous, the bet is worth more than it costs, so you back it and don't lay it. Put four of those in a Lucky 15 (15 bets on four horses) and the edge compounds. It's a +EV lottery ticket. I made almost £5k on one Lucky 15 and over £1,000 on several others. One £4k day got that account closed.

  5. 5

Betfred slips, shop runs, then Covid

Online, I'd been gubbed (restricted) by nearly every bookie, Bet365 included. So near the end it was high-street shop runs: each-way no-lay, Betfred slips and boosted coupons, using Bookie Bashing. Once I had trouble getting paid. In 2020 Covid shut the shops and the sport, so I stopped, cancelled my tools, and later taught matched betting to beginners.

The bit most people skip: the plain matched betting in step 1 is low-variance. You know the outcome before the event starts. Steps 2 to 5 aren't. They win on average and swing hard. Matched betting is what built the float, the pot of money that let me ride those swings without stopping. And that's where the big money eventually is.

What matched betting actually is

A bookmaker offers you "bet £10, get a £10 free bet". Most people put the free bet on a favourite and hope. A matched bettor places the bet at the bookmaker (that's backing it) and places the opposite bet at a betting exchange such as Betfair Exchange or Smarkets, where you can bet that something won't happen (that's laying it). One bet always wins and the other always loses. With the stakes set right, you end up with the same amount whatever the result.

On your own £10 that "same amount" is a loss of a few pence. On the free bet it's a profit, because the free bet costs nothing if it loses. No tips, no hunches, no knowing anything about football. Just arithmetic.

How it works in 3 steps

  1. Back £10 at the bookmaker to qualify for the offer.
  2. Lay the same result at the exchange, so you lose pennies whatever happens.
  3. Repeat with the free bet at higher odds, and keep about 75% of it as cash.

Here are the real numbers on a "bet £10, get a £10 free bet" offer, with 2% exchange commission:

Bet A: the qualifying bet (your £10)

Back £10 on Arsenal at 3.0 at the bookie. Lay £9.74 on Arsenal at 3.1 at the exchange (2% commission). Liability: £20.45.

Qualifying bet outcomes
If…BookieExchangeYou end up
Arsenal win+£20.00−£20.45−£0.45
Arsenal don't win−£10.00+£9.55 (£9.74 less 2%)−£0.45

That 45p is the qualifying loss: what it costs you to unlock the free bet. Same either way.

Bet B: the £10 free bet (the bookie's money)

Back the £10 free bet at 5.0. Lay £7.72 at 5.2 at the exchange. Liability: £32.43.

Free bet outcomes
If…BookieExchangeYou end up
Your pick wins+£40.00 (stake not returned)−£32.43+£7.57
Your pick loses£0 (it was free)+£7.57 (£7.72 less 2%)+£7.57

Offer total: £7.57 − £0.45 = £7.12 profit, decided before a ball is kicked.

From float to +EV

This is the order it works in. Skip a step and the swings in step 3 will eat you.

1

Matched betting

Sign-up offers and reloads, locked in with a lay at the exchange. You know the outcome before the race starts.

Variance: low

2

Build the float

Keep the profits in play as a bankroll. The float is what lets you take a hit without stopping.

Variance: you're the buffer

3

+EV plays

Each-way no-lay, Lucky 15s, 2-up, casino and no-wagering spins. Positive expected value, but results swing.

Variance: high, only with float you can see dip

The calculators

They do the arithmetic from the example above for any odds, stake and commission.

Why the UK is the best place on the planet for this

No income tax on winnings. Profit from UK bookmaker offers is yours to keep.

The most competitive bookmaker market going. Dozens of firms fighting for the same punters means a constant stream of sign-up offers, reloads and boosts. Every one of them is maths you can do.

That's why this site is UK-only. Every offer, odds format and example here is British.

It's maths, not gambling

No tips, no "nap of the day", no system to sell you. I don't like gurus charging £1,000 for a course either. Everything here is free and shows its working. Where something carries real risk, it says so in plain English, with the numbers.
